Malaysia has declared an air quality emergency in a town in Sarawak after pollution levels rose to dangerous heights, with smoke from fires in neighbouring Indonesia worsening conditions across parts of Borneo.
The emergency was announced on Friday in Serian, a town near the Indonesian border, after its Air Pollutant Index reached 521. The reading was recorded by Malaysia’s environment department and exceeded the country’s emergency-level threshold.
The situation has also affected Kuching, Sarawak’s capital, where the air quality index reached 311. Thick haze has reduced visibility and raised concerns about the health of residents, particularly children, older people and those with existing respiratory conditions.
Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, consented to the declaration of an emergency in Serian, according to a statement from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s office.

Indonesian authorities have deployed firefighting resources and attempted to induce rain in an effort to control the fires.
Police also announced on Friday that 112 people had been arrested over suspected involvement in recent forest and peatland fires across 10 provinces on Sumatra and Borneo.
The suspects were described as local farmers accused of deliberately burning land to clear it at a lower cost. Authorities are investigating whether the fires were started intentionally and whether they contributed to the spread of the haze.
Indonesia’s National Police said it was investigating 167 cases involving the deliberate burning of approximately 4,700 hectares of land across nine provinces.
The government has also suspended the business licences of five companies over alleged forest and land fires within their concessions in Kalimantan.
The worsening haze has raised concerns about the impact of hazardous air on public health. Prolonged exposure to smoke can increase the risk of breathing difficulties and other respiratory problems, especially among vulnerable groups.
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring air quality and may introduce further restrictions if pollution levels remain dangerously high.
The emergency in Serian also highlights the regional nature of Southeast Asia’s haze problem. While Malaysia is taking measures to protect residents, the long-term solution depends heavily on preventing and controlling fires in Indonesia.
